Model United Nations Program
Our Lady of Mercy School

Rio de Janeiro, September 9, 2008

This program is designed to offer an opportunity for our students to participate in an international meeting with students from all over the world to discuss world problems from a UN perspective through the integration of peoples. OLM will be offering this program on a bi-yearly basis. This means that the next MUN after the 2009 meeting will be in 2011.

The Model United Nations Program, MUN, is not new to Our Lady of Mercy School. In previous years we have had our students participating in the Brazil MUN program and the NYC MUN Program.

Students are selected and then study for several months to represent their school and in some cases their specific country at the NY MUN. Several days of presenting proposals and debates are held under the supervision of officials from American Universities and the United Nations. Students have the opportunity to defend polemic questions that relate to the environment, sustainable energy, world poverty, terrorism etc.

The Department of Social Studies (DSS) is responsible for this program at OLM. Students will be selected to participate in the MUN 2011 based on: Grade Point Average (minimum of 3.0), behavior record (No Suspensions), motivation, and participation in classroom. Students are observed, beginning in the ninth grade in all these aspects.

This year we are proud to announce that 30 students have been selected and accepted this challenge.

This an exciting program which helps our students become more responsible and effective citizens.
