"Our Lady of Mercy School is an American, Catholic School whose mission
is to educate the whole person for global understanding."
Our Lady of Mercy School (OLM) is an accredited, English language, American and Brazilian curriculum school which provides cutting edge educational programs based on Catholic principles for children of all nationalities in a traditional learning situation.
Our Lady of Mercy School is maintained by the Society of Our Lady of Mercy, which was founded by resident British and American families of Rio de Janeiro in 1919 for the original purpose of celebrating Catholic services and offering spiritual support to visitors to the city of Rio de Janeiro. The Society’s objectives expanded and the School was established between 1952 and 1953. It has served international families since that time.
Our Lady of Mercy School is situated in the borough of Botafogo, nestled between Sugar Loaf and the Christ the Redeemer Statue, about five miles from the center of the city and one mile from some of the most famous beaches in the world.
The School’s philosophy is to prepare students to develop character, spiritual values, social awareness, to discover individual talents and develop interpersonal skills in order to become a responsible citizens in any culture. The international atmosphere promotes solid understanding and knowledge of the dignity of all people.
In order to fulfill the School´s philosophy and successfully implement the learning program, the School provides:
- Motivation to develop dynamic relationships among the participants in the educational process: educating as the discoverer of human potential, the teacher as guide and advisor, and the administration as integrator and coordinator of the educational process;
- Opportunity for active participation in the liturgies of the Catholic Church;
- Guidance for the student to cope with constant change;
- Emphasis on growth in relation to the age of the student, and the social context where he or she lives;
- An appreciation of creation, and of the arts;
- Awareness of the importance of physical fitness and team play;
- Development and application of innovative learning experiences and evaluation of content and method;
- Full understanding of the English language from its social, economic, historical, and geographical perspectives for American students, host country national students, and third country national students.
- A complete curriculum qualifying students for valid dual high school diplomas (American and Brazilian). Receipt of Our Lady of Mercy School’s high school diploma, valid both in Brazil and in the United States, is important for students who plan to attend universities in Europe or in other parts of the world because most universities outside Brazil require that the student hold a diploma which is legally recognized in the country in which it was earned.
